I am an early medievalist who works on conversions to Christianity in medieval Europe and specifically the material and cultural histories of the Church in the Insular world 600-1200 AD. I teach a broad array of interdisciplinary premodern history courses with an active learning approach. Using primary sources (including objects and architectures), my students explore the ritual and routine lives of men and women in the premodern world, from vikings in Newfoundland to crusaders in Jerusalem. Class activities are immersive and interactive, including hands-on experiential workshops on making medieval pilgrims’ badges, writing with premodern ink and quills, and roleplaying the arrival of the plague to 14th-century Norwich. My undergrad and grad programs were highly interdisciplinary and encouraged collaboration between scholars and fields of study, which is why I am passionate about our Medieval and Renaissance Studies (MRST) minor here at UNL.
